the outside world then it will hunt, no doubt about it, it's all
part of being a cat. |

If your cats are not overweight, they don't need a weight control food.
To tell if your cats are overweight, run your fingers along their ribs
firmly, but not pressing hard. If you can feel their ribs, they are not
overweight. If you have to push into flesh hard to feel the ribs, they
are overweight. Additionally, if you look at the cats headon, if their
sides stick out, like footballs, they are overweight.
If they are normal weight, but seem to be eating more than they used to,
take them to the vet for an evaluation. There are some causes for that,
such as possibly internal parasites such as tapeworms. Cats can get
tapeworms from fleas. If your cats are still under a year old, even if
they seem to be at adult size, they may be eating more since they are
still growing and may be at a growth spurt, requiring more calories. I
took in a cat from the streets who was bigger than my year old cats so I
thought he was a full adult, but it turns out he was only about 7 months
old according to the vet and still grew larger!
The best cat foods are not available in grocery stores. Many cats need
to eat a lot of grocery store foods as those foods contain fillers that
the cats either can't digest well, or the ingredients are not high
enough quality resulting in the need for the cats to eat more of it in
order to get all the required nutrients. Premium foods sold in food
stores are more nutrient dense, so the cats need to eat less of it to
get the same amount of needed nutrients. Do be advised, though, that pet
stores also sell some of the same brands in grocery stores, so you need
to read labels.
The best foods will have on the ingredient labels a named meat as the
first ingredient, some other meat source in the next two ingredients, a
minimum of grain ingredients, preferably no corn, no by-products, and
not preserved with the suspected cancer causing preservatives BHA or BHT.
The fat source in the best cat foods is chicken fat, as it is more
easily digested by cats than other fat sources, and has more of the
fatty acids in the correct proporations that are best for cats. Labels
are written with the most of an ingredient listed first, with the
ingredients in order from greatest amount to least. So the placement of
an ingredient on a label makes a difference.
Some of the top brands of cat foods are Wellness, Chicken Soup for the
Cat Lover's Soul, Innova, Natural Balance, Evolve, Lick Your Chops, and
Nutro Complete Care.

Hi, I'm Mollie - I had a nice home when I was a
kitten, but my owners moved away to another country, and I got left
behind with someone else. Trouble was, they didn't really like cats, so
I got left outside all the time. I was cold and wet in the winter, and I
had to flick the post box with my nose when I wanted to come in - and I
ended up breaking it (my nose, not the post box!), and now have a bump
on my nose - and I can snore for England! Eventually I was handed over
to a nice foster carer at Cats Protection, who looked after me until
finally, my new mum and dad walked through the door. They were looking
for a boy cat, but when my new 'mum' sat down I decided to change their
minds, so I jumped on her lap and purred and purred. They had to take me
home after that! I've been here 7 months now and I'm loving my new home!
Everyone's been really nice, and I have grandparents and great
grandparents who all love me too, but I've become daddy's little girl.
They're thinking about moving to France one day, but I know I won't get
left behind this time, they're already looking into getting me a
passport!
I’m a cute calico cat and this is the story of how I
adopted my humans. I didn’t have a great start in life. My earliest
memory was being in this house with building workers who would feed me
some of their lunches. I was left there at night all by myself and it
was so cold and scary! Then one night, just before Christmas one of the
workers left his truck door open. I was cold and hungry, so I decided to
jump in and warm up. The man found me there, but felt sorry for me and
took me for a long ride to his house. There was a nice lady there, so I
put on my best behaviour and turned up the charm, purring and meowing my
best meows, to show her how nice I was. The next day she took me to the
Vet, as I was a pretty sick kitty. They gave me pills and stuck needles
in me, (ouch!), but I soon started to feel better. My new Mum and Dad
named me Molly and I’m the luckiest rescue cat around… well that’s what
I think, and after a bit of training these humans have turned out just
great!
Hi there, I'm Rupert. I was abandoned when I was still
a kitten, and left to fend for myself. Luckily, I managed to make
friends with a family of three foxes, and they let me eat with them.
They told me about a nice lady who comes round every night to fed them,
and that there was always plenty of food to go round. She was very
surprised to see me, to say the least! After she'd seen me feeding with
the foxes for about a week, she decided that it wasn't an ideal life for
such a young puss, so she arranged a place for me at a cat rescue. I'm
friendly sort, so when they came to collect me, I jumped into the cat
basket and purred all the way. I'm now very happy in my foster home at
the moment, and will soon be going to a new home of my own. I'm looking
forward to that, but I'll never forget my foxy buddies!
Hi my name's Poppy. My first family moved away and
left me behind, and a kind person found me and took me to the rescue
centre. I watched people walk by looking at all the other cats, but when
I saw my new folks, I knew right away they were mine! I turned up the
charm, purring and meowing my best meows, and they just couldn't resist.
They had sadly lost one of their cats in a road accident, and wanted to
give another cat a good home, and to be a playmate for their other cat
Sylvan. I have all the love, food and toys I could want, and I quickly
made myself at home here. Sylvan is still 'top cat' though, and
occasionally has to remind me of the fact, but that's OK. I'd just like
to say thank you to the person who found me and to the rescue centre for
helping me find my new family, I wouldn't be where I am today without
them!
Hello, my name's Chris. I became a stray as a young
kitten, and had a pretty tough life on the streets in those weeks. When
I was rescued I was still only ten weeks old, but had already lost one
eye. They took me to a vets, and advertised for my owner in local
newspaper, but no one claimed me. That's when I came here to live with
my current folks. I used to have fits when I was young, and regularly
had chest infections. I was always pretty skinny too, and my fur never
looked that great, so they didn't think I'd ever make old bones. Still,
with medication and lots of love, the fits stopped and to everyone's
surprise, I've gone on to reach my present age of fifteen, and still
going strong! I'm one of seven cats here, and I'd say I count myself
very lucky indeed!
